Environmental research is a set of activities that are carried out at the pre-design stage, during the construction process and after the commissioning of the facility. They are necessary for assessing the state and forecasting likely changes in the environment under the influence of anthropogenic load.

Studies are also carried out in order to minimize, and if possible eliminate the adverse effects of anthropogenic factors, to ensure the safety of the environment and people. In the article, we consider the methods used in environmental research, as well as get acquainted with the features of their implementation. With the Green Exam you can have the best choices now.

What is environmental research for?

Environmental studies are carried out for a comprehensive assessment of the state of the environment, analysis of possible risks during construction, as well as the development of measures to reduce or prevent negative consequences during the operation of the facility. Mostly this set of works includes environmental engineering surveys and environmental monitoring.

Environmental surveys are carried out at the pre-design stage in order to assess the state of the natural environment and the possible anthropogenic load, as well as make competent design decisions. These measures are necessary to ensure the conservation of natural resources and the safety of people. The characteristics of air, surface and underground waters, and soil are subject to study. The radiation situation, the intensity of electromagnetic radiation and other parameters are estimated.

Since construction work has a direct impact on the state of the environment, environmental monitoring is required during the construction of the facility and after its commissioning. This type of work is necessary for the timely identification of adverse effects and minimize the consequences.

The main objectives of environmental research are as follows:

  • Assessment of the status of individual components of the ecosystem (groundwater, soil, air, animal, plant life, etc.).
  • Assessment of the state of the ecosystem as a whole, as well as the study of its ability to self-repair under the influence of destructive factors.
  • Determination of the impact zone of construction, depending on the developed project.
  • The forecast of possible changes in the environmental situation under the influence of technogenic processes.
  • Assessment of changes that have occurred as a result of construction work, as well as the development of measures to eliminate or minimize the consequences.

Environmental studies are carried out in accordance with the tasks set in the technical specifications of the Customer and the regulatory framework. They can be carried out separately or in combination with other works (geological, geodetic and others). In case of the Green Associate Exam  all kinds of studies will be needed.

Work sequence:

  • Preparation and analysis of available materials regarding the future development site and the surrounding area.
  • Development of an approximate plan and schedule (program) for field work. At this stage, their volume is determined, as well as research methods.
  • Organization of field units, equipping with necessary materials and tools.
  • Field research.
  • Counting and analysis of the results (office work).
  • Drawing up charts and maps, reporting documentation.
  • Transfer of the report to the Customer.
  • Obtaining opinions from the authorities.
  • Passing an examination in the field of ecology.
